Vaginoplasty and Vaginal Tightening in Ahmedabad

Written and medically reviewed by Dr Arth Shah, MBBS (Gujarat University, 2009), MS General Surgery (Sardar Patel University, 2014), MCh Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, 2017). Gujarat Medical Council registration G-25994.

The short version

Vaginoplasty narrows a vaginal canal that has stretched, usually after childbirth, and repairs the perineum. Before considering it, two things matter. If you leak urine, feel a bulge, or have a dragging feeling, that needs a gynaecological assessment first – it may be prolapse, which surgery of this kind does not treat. And for many women, pelvic floor exercises with a physiotherapist help enough on their own. If surgery is right, it takes under two hours, needs six to eight weeks before intercourse, and is best done once your family is complete. In Ahmedabad it costs roughly Rs [VERIFY].

What this page is about

The word “vaginoplasty” is used for more than one operation. This page is about tightening a vagina that has stretched, usually after childbirth. If you are looking for gender-affirming vaginoplasty, or reconstruction for a vagina that has not formed, those are specialist procedures – please contact us and we will point you in the right direction. [VERIFY what the clinic offers.] Reshaping the outer lips is labiaplasty, and repair of the hymen is hymenoplasty.

Why things change after childbirth

During a vaginal delivery, the vagina, its supporting muscles and the perineum stretch a great deal. Most of that recovers. Sometimes the tissues at the opening remain wider, the muscles stay weak, or a tear or episiotomy heals in a way that leaves the area feeling different.

Ageing and the drop in oestrogen after menopause also change the vaginal tissues – but that causes dryness and thinning rather than looseness, and it is treated with medical rather than surgical care.

Start with your pelvic floor

Much of what feels like looseness is weak pelvic floor muscles rather than a wider vagina – and muscles can be trained. Pelvic floor exercises help many women, and surgery cannot make muscles stronger.

  • Done correctly and consistently, exercises take about three months to show their effect.
  • A pelvic floor physiotherapist can check you are doing them correctly – many women are not.
  • Treating constipation and avoiding heavy lifting helps too.

We would rather you try this first. If it is not enough, surgery is still there. [VERIFY whether the clinic can refer to a pelvic floor physiotherapist in Ahmedabad.]

When it needs a gynaecologist first

Please tell us if you have any of these:

Leaking urine when you cough, laugh, sneeze or exercise; a bulge or lump you can feel at the opening; a heavy or dragging feeling; difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels; pain during sex; or unusual bleeding.

These can be signs of prolapse or urinary incontinence. Cosmetic tightening does not treat them, and treating the wrong problem leaves you with the original symptoms and a new operation behind you. We will arrange a proper assessment first. [VERIFY whether in-house or by referral.]

What about laser or radiofrequency tightening?

You will see these advertised as quick, non-surgical alternatives. We would rather be straight with you: the US Food and Drug Administration has warned against energy-based devices being marketed for vaginal “rejuvenation”, after reports of burns, scarring and lasting pain, and because the evidence for these uses is not established.

[VERIFY the clinic’s position. If it does not offer these treatments, say so plainly – it is a point in the clinic’s favour.]

What vaginoplasty involves

  • The operation: the stretched tissue at the back wall of the vagina is narrowed, separated muscle is brought back together, and the perineum and vaginal opening are repaired.
  • Anaesthetic: general or spinal. [VERIFY.]
  • Time: usually 45 to 90 minutes.
  • Where: [VERIFY – at the clinic or a partner hospital in Ahmedabad.]
  • Stay: day case or one night.
  • Stitches:

When to have it

  • At least six to twelve months after delivery, so tissues have fully recovered.
  • Ideally once your family is complete – a later vaginal delivery can undo the result.
  • Not while pregnant or breastfeeding. [VERIFY.]
  • After you have given pelvic floor training a fair try.

Recovery

When

What to expect

First week

Swelling, soreness and light bleeding; painkillers and ice help

1-2 weeks

Most women return to desk work

2-4 weeks

Stitches dissolve; avoid heavy lifting and exercise

6-8 weeks

No intercourse or tampons until then

3 months

Swelling settled; final result becoming clear

Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose cotton underwear, avoid constipation, and follow the advice you are given about returning to exercise.

Results - and what surgery cannot promise

Most women notice a firmer, more supported feeling and are more comfortable with how things are. What surgery cannot promise is a particular level of sensation, or a change in your sex life, because those depend on many things beyond anatomy. Any surgeon who guarantees those things is overpromising.
