After a large weight loss – from bariatric surgery, weight-loss injections or diet – stretched skin usually cannot shrink back. Exercise and creams do not change it, and liposuction makes it looser. Body contouring removes the excess skin from the arms, thighs, tummy and breasts, usually in two or three stages over about a year. It leaves long, permanent scars placed where clothes hide them where possible. You should be at a stable weight for six to twelve months, with good nutrition, before starting. In Ahmedabad, individual procedures range from roughly Rs. Losing a large amount of weight is hard, and most people who manage it expect the mirror to reflect the work. Often it does not. The weight has gone, but the skin that held it is still there – hanging from the arms, folding across the stomach, loose along the thighs. That is not a failure of effort, and it is not something more exercise will fix. Skin that has been stretched for years loses much of its ability to spring back. Removing it surgically is the only treatment that works. This page explains what can be done for each area, what the scars are really like, why it is usually done in stages, how to know you are ready, and what it costs in Ahmedabad.
When skin is stretched over a long period, the elastic fibres that let it recoil are damaged. After a small weight change, skin tightens back. After losing 30, 40 or 60 kilos, carried for years, it usually cannot – particularly as we get older.
What people try | Does it help? |
Exercise | Builds muscle underneath, which is good for you – but does not tighten stretched skin |
Creams and oils | No |
Skin-tightening machines | Only for mild looseness, not the folds that follow major weight loss |
Liposuction on its own | Makes it worse – it takes away the fat that is left and leaves the same skin with less underneath |
Removing the extra skin | Yes – the only thing that does |
It is not only about appearance. Folds of skin cause rashes and infections – especially in Ahmedabad’s heat – chafe when you walk, make exercise uncomfortable, and make clothes hard to fit. For many people, removing the skin is what finally lets them enjoy the health they worked for.
If your concern is loose skin and muscle separation after pregnancy rather than major weight loss, our tummy tuck page is the better place to start.
The most important decision is when. Operating while you are still losing weight means the skin loosens again. Operating before your body has recovered its nutritional reserves means slower, riskier healing. |
You are usually ready when | Why it matters |
Your weight has been stable for six to twelve months | Further loss loosens the result |
It has been 12-18 months since bariatric surgery | Most loss happens in the first year |
You are close to your goal weight | Results and safety are better |
Your protein, iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D are healthy | Deficiencies are common after weight-loss surgery and directly slow wound healing |
You do not smoke | Smoking causes wound breakdown in long incisions |
Diabetes and blood pressure are controlled | Both affect healing and anaesthetic safety |
Blood tests are checked before surgery, and nutrition is part of the plan rather than an afterthought. Rejuva Aesthetica has a clinical dietitian who works with patients before and after surgery to build up protein and correct deficiencies. If you lost weight with injections. The same rules apply: a stable weight for at least six months, and ideally not mid-course. Tell us about any weight-loss medicine you are taking – these medicines slow down stomach emptying, and your anaesthetist will advise whether to pause them before surgery.
Removes the loose, hanging skin of the upper arm, and any remaining fat with liposuction where needed. The scar runs along the inside of the arm from the armpit toward the elbow, and after large weight loss often continues into the armpit and down the side of the chest, where loose skin continues too. It is the most visible of the scars on this page – we discuss exactly where it will sit before surgery.
Removes loose skin from the inner thighs. For mild looseness, the scar sits in the groin crease. After major weight loss the extra skin usually runs the length of the thigh, so a second scar down the inner thigh is needed to tighten it properly. Loose skin on the outer thighs and buttocks is usually treated as part of a lower body lift.
Operation | What it involves | Best for |
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) | A low scar across the lower abdomen; skin pulled down and tightened; muscles repaired | |
Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck | Adds a vertical scar up the middle, so skin is tightened side to side as well as top to bottom | Very common after major weight loss |
Belt lipectomy / lower body lift | A scar all the way around the waist, lifting the tummy, flanks, buttocks and outer thighs together | Loose skin circling the whole lower body |
Panniculectomy | Removes the hanging apron of skin only | When the main problem is rashes and hygiene |
Women: after weight loss, breasts often look empty, flat and low. A breast lift raises and reshapes them. Where volume has been lost, it can be restored with breast implants or by using your own tissue to rebuild shape.
Men: loose chest skin and remaining breast tissue are removed and the chest tightened – see gynaecomastia surgery.
Back rolls, the bra line, the buttocks and the face and neck can also be treated. We will talk through everything that bothers you at the first consultation, even if it is not done at the same time.
Treating every area at once would mean a very long operation, more blood loss, and a recovery where you could not move comfortably in any direction. So the work is usually split into two or three operations, three to six months apart.
Stage | Commonly | When |
1 | Tummy or lower body – usually the biggest problem | First |
2 | Breast or chest, often with the arms | 3-6 months later |
3 | Thighs | 3-6 months later |
The order depends on what bothers you most and what is safest. The whole journey usually takes around a year.
Area | Where the scar usually sits |
Arms | Inner arm, armpit to elbow; sometimes down the side of the chest |
Thighs | Groin crease; often also down the inner thigh |
Tummy | Low across the abdomen; plus a vertical scar for fleur-de-lis; around the waist for a body lift |
Breast | Around the nipple and down, often along the fold beneath |
Most people tell us the trade was worth it many times over. We want you to make it with full information. Scar care – silicone, sun protection and patience – follows the same principles described on our scar revision page.
Area | Back to desk work | Exercise | Compression |
Arms | 1-2 weeks | Avoid lifting 4-6 weeks | 4-6 weeks |
Thighs | 2-3 weeks | 6 weeks | 6 weeks |
Tummy | 2-3 weeks | 6-8 weeks | 6 weeks |
Body lift | 3-4 weeks | 8 weeks | 6-8 weeks |
Breast | 1-2 weeks | 6 weeks | Support bra 6 weeks |
Keep eating well during recovery – protein matters more now than at any other time.
When | What you see |
Immediately | The shape change is visible straight away |
Weeks 1-6 | Swelling and bruising; scars pink |
Months 3-6 | Swelling settled; shape much clearer |
Months 12-18 | Scars mature, flatten and fade – the final result |
Cost depends on how many areas are treated, the type of operation, hospital stay and anaesthesia. Most people have a staged plan, so the total matters more than any single figure.

Body contouring after weight loss carries more risk than routine cosmetic surgery, because the operations are larger and the healing demands are greater.
Body contouring at Rejuva Aesthetica is performed by Dr Arth Shah, who completed his MBBS at Gujarat University in 2009, his MS in General Surgery at Sardar Patel University in 2014, and his MCh in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad in 2017. He is registered with the Gujarat Medical Council under registration number G-25994.
Your first consultation takes about forty minutes. We look at every area that bothers you, check whether you are ready, explain which operations would help and in what order, and give you the cost of the whole plan. Bring your weight history and any recent blood tests.

Only slightly, and mostly in the first year. After a large weight loss carried for years, stretched skin usually cannot recoil. Exercise, creams and time do not remove it; surgery does.
Usually 12 to 18 months after surgery, once your weight has been stable for six to twelve months and your nutrition is healthy.
It depends on the areas treated and the operation needed. Most people have a staged plan, so ask for the cost of the whole plan.
Usually not. It is safer to split the work into two or three operations, three to six months apart. Some combinations - such as breast and arms - can be done together.
Yes, and after major weight loss they are long. They are placed where clothing hides them wherever possible and fade over 12 to 18 months, but they are permanent.
No. Liposuction removes fat. On its own it can make loose skin look worse, because it takes away the fat underneath and leaves the same skin.
Yes, once your weight has been stable for at least six months. Tell us about the medicine - it can affect anaesthesia and may need to be paused before surgery.
A tummy tuck with an extra vertical scar up the middle, so loose skin is removed side to side as well as top to bottom. It is common after major weight loss.
An operation that removes loose skin all the way around the waist, lifting the tummy, flanks, buttocks and outer thighs together. The scar runs around the body at the waistline.
Low protein, iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D are common after weight-loss surgery and slow wound healing. Correcting them before surgery makes healing safer.
Most people return to desk work in one to three weeks depending on the area, with a body lift taking longer. Strenuous exercise waits six to eight weeks.
Along the inside of the upper arm, from the armpit toward the elbow. After major weight loss it may continue down the side of the chest.

Yes. Men commonly need chest, abdomen and flank contouring, and the approach is the same.
Weight gain stretches the skin again and affects the result, which is why a stable weight matters before surgery.
You will be sore for the first week or two, managed with medication. Arm and breast surgery are usually more comfortable than a body lift.
Yes. Because the plan is staged, travel is usually planned around each operation and the first week of recovery.
