Hymenoplasty is a short, private procedure that repairs the hymen using fine dissolvable stitches, under local anaesthetic, with home the same day. It is best done at least six to eight weeks before any planned date. Many women experience some bleeding afterwards during intercourse, but this cannot be guaranteed – and no surgery or examination can prove virginity. It is available only to adults, and only by choice.
Women consider hymenoplasty for many reasons – personal, cultural, emotional, or after an injury or assault. Whatever the reason, it is yours, and you will not be asked to justify it. This page explains, plainly and privately, what the procedure involves, what it can and cannot do, how long recovery takes, and what it costs.
The hymen is a thin fold of tissue at the entrance of the vagina. It varies greatly from one woman to another, and it can stretch or tear through exercise, tampon use, injury, sexual activity or simply over time. Hymenoplasty brings the remaining edges of the hymen together with fine stitches to recreate a narrower opening.
It can | It cannot |
Repair and reshape the hymen | Guarantee bleeding during intercourse |
Be done quickly and privately | “Restore virginity” – virginity is not a physical state |
Give peace of mind to some women | Be detected or proven by any examination |
Many hymens never bleed, even the first time. International health agencies, including the World Health Organization, have stated that examining the hymen cannot show whether someone has had sex. We tell you this because you deserve accurate information. If your concern is looseness after childbirth, that is a different procedure – see our cosmetic gynaecology page.
Healing takes about six to eight weeks. If you have a particular date in mind, plan the procedure at least that far ahead.
When | What to expect |
First few days | Mild soreness and light spotting; simple painkillers help |
1-2 days | Most women return to work or study |
2-3 weeks | Stitches dissolve |
6-8 weeks | Avoid intercourse, tampons, cycling and strenuous exercise until then |
Keep the area clean, wear loose cotton underwear, and avoid swimming until advised.
Once healed, the hymen has a narrower, more closed shape. The repaired tissue is delicate, and some women experience bleeding when it stretches – but because every body is different, this cannot be promised.
Hymenoplasty is not usually covered by health insurance.

A short procedure that repairs the hymen with fine dissolvable stitches to recreate a narrower opening, under local anaesthetic.
It cannot be guaranteed. Many women experience some bleeding when the repaired tissue stretches, but every body is different - and many hymens never bleed at all.
No. Virginity is not a physical state, and no examination can prove it. Hymenoplasty repairs tissue; it does not change anyone's history.
The price depends on whether a simple repair or a flap technique is needed.
Yes. Consultations are private, records are confidential, and no photographs are used without your written consent.
At least six to eight weeks, so healing is complete.
It is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards there is usually mild soreness for a few days.
The stitches dissolve and healing is usually discreet. No examination can reliably show whether a hymen has been repaired or whether someone has had sex.
Most women return to work in one to two days. Avoid intercourse, tampons and strenuous exercise for six to eight weeks.
It is a minor procedure with a low risk of complications when performed by a qualified surgeon in a proper setting.
The hymen can be repaired, but it does not tighten the vagina. Changes after childbirth are treated differently - ask at your consultation.
No. We only perform hymenoplasty for adults making their own decision.
