The short version

After an accident, orthopaedic surgeons treat broken bones. A plastic surgeon treats the skin and soft tissue – facial cuts, hand and finger injuries, cut tendons and nerves, bites, and wounds that need a skin graft or flap – and later the scars and stiffness they leave. Timing matters: facial cuts heal best when closed carefully early, and cut tendons and nerves should be repaired within days. For serious injuries, go to an emergency department first. Costs in Ahmedabad range from a few thousand rupees for a small repair to much more for staged reconstruction, and accident injuries are often covered by insurance or accident claims.

In an emergency

For heavy bleeding, a head injury, loss of consciousness, an eye injury, a chest or abdominal injury, or a suspected broken bone – call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Press firmly on bleeding with a clean cloth. If a finger or part has been cut off, wrap it in damp clean gauze, seal it in a plastic bag, place the bag on ice – never directly on ice – and take it with you to a hospital straight away.

For facial cuts and hand injuries that are not life-threatening, a plastic surgeon can be asked to repair them.

What a plastic surgeon does after an injury

Accidents rarely injure only bone. Skin is torn, tendons and nerves are cut, and faces and hands – the parts people see and use most – are often involved. Plastic and reconstructive surgery repairs these tissues so they heal with the best possible function and appearance, and rebuilds them when they have been lost or damaged.

  • Closing facial cuts so they heal with fine, well-placed scars.
  • Repairing cut tendons so fingers bend and straighten again.
  • Joining cut nerves so feeling can return.
  • Covering skin loss and exposed bone with grafts and flaps.
  • Improving scars, stiffness and deformity long after an accident.

Injuries we treat

Face

Cuts to the lip, eyelid, nose and ear need precise repair – a millimetre out of line at the lip border stays visible for life. Careful cleaning, layered stitches and fine sutures removed early give the best scar. If an earlier repair has healed badly, facial scar revision can help once the scar has matured.

Hands and fingers

Cuts from glass and knives, crush injuries from doors and machines, fingertip loss and nail bed injuries. Hands matter for work and daily life, and early specialist repair makes the biggest difference to how well they recover.

Tendons and nerves

A small cut on the palm, wrist or finger can hide a cut tendon or nerve. If a finger will not bend or straighten fully, or part of it feels numb after a cut, have it checked within days. Early repair gives far better results than late repair.

Tendons are stitched and protected in a splint while they heal, with hand therapy afterwards. Nerves are joined under magnification and regrow slowly – roughly a millimetre a day – so feeling returns over months.

Dog and animal bites

Bites are washed thoroughly, damaged tissue removed, and wounds closed where it is safe – facial bites usually are. Antibiotics and tetanus cover are given as needed, and rabies vaccination should be started straight away after any dog or animal bite.

Skin loss, degloving and open wounds

Road accidents can scrape or tear away large areas of skin, especially on the legs and feet. Skin grafts cover raw areas; flaps – tissue with its own blood supply – cover deeper wounds, exposed bone and tendon.

Kite-string injuries during Uttarayan

Glass-coated kite string cuts the face, neck and fingers of riders and kite flyers every January. Neck cuts can be dangerous – go to an emergency department. Facial and finger cuts benefit from careful early repair.

Why timing matters

Injury

Best time for repair

Facial cut

Ideally within the first several hours

Cut tendon

Within days

Cut nerve

Early, ideally within days

Cut-off finger or part

Hours – go to a hospital with microsurgery immediately

Scar improvement

12-18 months later, once the scar has matured

Working with your orthopaedic surgeon

When a broken bone is exposed through the skin, two surgeons are needed: an orthopaedic surgeon to fix the bone and a plastic surgeon to cover it with healthy tissue. Working together reduces infection and helps the bone heal. We work alongside your orthopaedic team rather than replacing them.

Months or years after an accident

Many people come to us long after the first treatment, which was done quickly in an emergency. It is rarely too late to improve things.

  • Wide or uneven facial scars – scar revision.
  • Stiff fingers or weak grip – tendon release or transfer, with hand therapy.
  • Lasting numbness – nerve repair or grafting.
  • Tight scars across joints – contracture release, as on our burn reconstruction
  • Notches in the lip or ear, or a misshapen nose – local flaps and grafts.
  • Scalp scars without hair – see hair restoration after scalp scarring.

What happens at your visit

  • Assessment: the wound, movement, feeling, and any earlier treatment. Bring hospital papers and X-rays.
  • Plan: immediate repair, planned surgery, or waiting for healing first.
  • Anaesthesia: local anaesthetic for most facial and minor hand repairs; general anaesthetic in hospital for larger operations.
  • Aftercare: dressings, splints, stitch removal and hand therapy where needed.

Recovery

Repair

Typical recovery

Facial cut

Stitches out in 5-7 days; scar matures over a year

Tendon repair

Splint 4-6 weeks; hand therapy for 8-12 weeks

Nerve repair

Feeling returns gradually over months

Skin graft

Graft settles in 1-2 weeks; matures over months

Flap

Hospital stay; weeks to months depending on size

Results timeline

Wounds close within weeks, tendon strength builds over three months, nerve recovery continues for many months, and scars mature over 12 to 18 months. Some injuries need more than one operation.

Frequently Asked Question

It is repair and reconstruction of skin and soft tissue after an injury - facial cuts, hand injuries, cut tendons and nerves, bites and skin loss - and later treatment of scars and stiffness.

The same thing: plastic surgery after an accident, to repair and rebuild damaged tissue and improve function and appearance.

Broken bones are treated by orthopaedic surgeons. A plastic surgeon repairs the skin, tendons and nerves, and covers open fractures with healthy tissue, working alongside the orthopaedic team.

Ideally within the first several hours. Careful early repair gives the best scar. Facial wounds can often still be closed later after thorough cleaning.

Have it checked within days - a tendon may be cut. Early repair gives much better results than late repair.

Sometimes, if treated within hours at a hospital with microsurgery. Wrap the part in damp gauze, seal it in a bag, place the bag on ice - not directly on ice - and go immediately.

[VERIFY - insert the clinic's figures.] It ranges from a small laceration repair to staged flap reconstruction in hospital, depending on the injury.

Liposuction removes fat and relies on the skin retracting on its own; it does nothing for loose skin or separated muscle. A tummy tuck removes skin and repairs muscle. If you can pinch a thick roll and the skin springs back, liposuction may be all you need and it is a far smaller operation. If the skin hangs or the abdomen is firm and rounded and will not change with training, liposuction alone will not help and may make loose skin look worse.

Wash the wound under running water for 15 minutes, go to a hospital, and start rabies vaccination. Facial bites can usually be repaired carefully to reduce scarring.

Yes. Scars, stiffness and deformity can often be improved months or years later with scar revision, flaps, tendon surgery or laser.

After repair, nerves regrow roughly a millimetre a day, so feeling returns gradually over months. Earlier repair gives better recovery.

An injury where skin is torn away from the tissue underneath, often in road accidents. It is treated with cleaning, skin grafts and sometimes flaps.

After tendon repair, usually 8 to 12 weeks, starting with a splint and gentle movement.

Yes, facial and finger cuts. Neck cuts from kite string can be dangerous - go to an emergency department first.

Any cut through the skin leaves a scar. Careful repair makes it as fine as possible, and it can be improved later if needed.

The medico-legal case number, discharge summaries, bills and photographs of the injury. They help treatment planning and any claim.

Yes. Children's facial and hand injuries benefit greatly from careful early repair. Sedation or general anaesthesia may be needed.

Usually after 12 to 18 months, once it has matured - unless it is pulling an eyelid, lip or joint out of place.

Often, depending on your vaccination history and the wound. This is checked at your visit.

Yes. We can review photographs and hospital records first.
