What You Need to Know About Unilateral Gynecomastia or “One-Sided” Gynecomastia
The appearance of a female-like breast in a man is known as gynecomastia. It’s linked to an excess of breast tissue proliferation caused by an imbalance of the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone. While it is a harmless condition that will not harm the individual physically, it can have a significant psychological impact. Men with gynecomastia should seek treatment in the form of gynecomastia surgery as soon as possible.
Gynecomastia usually appears as two-sided or “bilateral” growth, but it can also appear as single-sided “unilateral” or asymmetrical gynecomastia in a small percentage of men (less than 5-10%). Unilateral gynecomastia, like bilateral gynecomastia, is a benign condition with similar diagnosis and treatment. Unilateral gynecomastia is more difficult for men to deal with than symmetrical or bilateral gynecomastia.
What Causes Unilateral Gynecomastia?
Unilateral gynecomastia has a wide range of clinical appearances. The gynecomastia can be large or small in size, and it can resemble a true female breast in appearance. It is more common to develop on the left side of the chest for unknown reasons. It may or may not be accompanied by tenderness, which usually lasts only a few days unless you’re taking medications that cause tissue inflammation. Because of unknown reasons, glandular gynecomastia tissue is more common than fibrous gynecomastia tissue.
Why some men develop unilateral gynecomastia is a mystery. ?
Pubertal development or hormone use are the most common causes of bilateral gynecomastia. Unilateral gynecomastia has been linked to a variety of drugs in some studies. Oral Finasteride, also known as “Propecia,” is a drug used to treat male androgenic alopecia (MAGA). It has been linked to unilateral gynecomastia.
An acute infection of the chest can cause unidirectional gynecomastia. This causes chest enlargement, pain, swelling, and redness, as well as a fever and chills. Antibiotic therapy or an incision and drainage procedure, also known as an incision and drainage procedure, may be used to treat it. In my 10 years of practice, I have never witnessed anything like this. Benign masses and cysts can also appear on only one side of the chest and are usually easy to diagnose by a trained professional. The benign mass is surgically removed in these cases.
