Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the loss of skin color in blotches. In vitiligo, the extent and rate of pigment loss are unpredictable and vary greatly from person to person.
When the pigment (Melanin) producing cells of the skin, known as melanocytes, die, white patches appear. Melanin, a skin pigment, gives skin its color and also protects it from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Vitiligo isn’t contagious, so it can’t be passed from one person to the next.
Symptoms Or Signs Of Vitiligo Include :
Discoloration of the skin
Premature whitening or graying of the scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, or beard
Discoloration of the tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose
Complete loss of or variation in color of the inner layer of the eyeball
Causes Of Vitiligo
The exact causes of Vitiligo are yet to be determined. But the disease can be related to the following:
1.) Autoimmune disorder
2.) Genetic oxidative stress imbalance
3.) Exposure to certain harmful chemicals
4.) Damage to the skin due to a critical sunburn or cut
5.) Heredity
6.) A neural or viral cause
In stable vitiligo patches, surgery is extremely beneficial. If a patient’s response to medical treatment is slow or non-existent, especially in the marriage age group, plastic surgery is a better and faster option. Children and active, unstable vitiligo patches are not candidates for surgery. The outcome varies depending on which body parts are involved, such as the lips, genitals, eyelids, bony prominences, and so on.
